Twenty-one priests in Philadelphia have been suspended over allegations of child molestation.   Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia said the 21 Roman Catholic priests were put on leave while their cases were being reviewed.  37 priests were identified as suspects in a grand jury report released last month following widespread claims of child molestation. The jurors also found that a panel set up by the archdiocese of Philadelphia was established mostly in the interest of the church. [BBC News]

TWENTY ONE IN PHILADELPHIA. TWENTY ONE

WTF. I’d like to point out that this is the same cardinal who raised such a fuss about my college having a Rainbow Week that we had to change the damned name and scrap some of the activities. Obviously his time would have been better served trying to protect the children who live in PA from abusive priests.
PA residents, these are the names of the accused:
Monsignor John A. Close of St. Catherine of Siena in Wayne, Pa.
The Rev. Mark Fernandes of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Sellersville, Pa.
Monsignor J. Michael Flood of St. Luke the Evangelist in Glenside, Pa.
The Rev. Joseph M. Glatts of SS. Simon and Jude in West Chester, Pa.
The Rev. Steven J. Harris of St. Issac Jogues Catholic Church in Wayne, Pa.
The Rev. Daniel J. Hoy of Our Lady of the Assumption in Strafford, Pa.
The Rev. Andrew McCormick of Sacred Heart in Swedesburg, Pa.
The Rev. Peter Talocci of St. Patrick’s in Malvern, Pa.

Former NC coach pleads guilty to NY sex charges ›

stfurapeculture:

Remember this excellent example of rape culture, in which a basketball coach raped a 16 y/o autistic girl but couldn’t be brought up on rape charges because she was over the age of consent in NC? Well, he was extradited to NY (where the rape occurred) and now…

The 63-year-old Wilson is expected to be sentenced to two consecutive one-year jail terms next month. He also will be required to register as a sex offender.

Man gets 30 months in abortion bomb plot ›

GREENSBORO — A former Rowan County resident who pleaded guilty last year to giving bomb-making instructions to an FBI informant was sentenced Wednesday morning to 30 months in federal prison.

Justin Carl Moose, 26, believed he was helping the man plan an attack on a women’s health clinic where abortions were performed. The Planned Parenthood Association alerted authorities after discovering that Moose was “advocating extreme violence” against such clinics on his Facebook page, court records say.

[…]

The judge sentenced Moose to have a mental health evaluation and alcohol/substance abuse treatment. Upon release from prison, Moose will be on supervised probation for three years and pay $100 in fines. While on probation, he must submit to random drug tests and participate in both a substance abuse and mental health treatment program.

He is also not to possess a computer or an electronic device that may enable him to access the Internet unless approved by his probation officer.

While not part of his sentence, Schroeder suggested Moose talk to a minister or priest about his “strong feelings” and the views he expressed on Facebook.

Execution sought for abortion clinic 'horrors' ›

HARRISBURG — Philadelphia prosecutors said Wednesday they will seek the death penalty against Dr. Kermit Gosnell for the deaths of newborns at his abortion clinic and are considering the same against a Mt. Lebanon man and others who worked in what officials called the “house of horrors.”

Steven Massof, 48, of Mt. Lebanon helped Gosnell cut the spinal cords of babies born at the West Philadelphia clinic that specialized in late-term abortions, according to a grand jury report. Prosecutors filed murder charges against Gosnell, Massof and two other former aides and other charges against four others in a case that brought swift changes in state oversight.

"The district attorney is considering whether to seek the death penalty" against the three former aides charged with murder, said Assistant District Attorney Christine Wechsler.

Gosnell’s lawyer said his client would die of old age before a death sentence could be carried out.

"Dr. Gosnell is never going to get the death penalty," lawyer Jack McMahon said after a brief court hearing. "You have a 70-year-old man, and it makes the case three times as long and as costly."

Pope being sued for crimes against humanity ›

jonathan-cunningham:

aatombomb:

If this is some sort of class action: SIGN ME UP.

Their charges concern “three worldwide crimes which until now have not been denounced … (as) the traditional reverence toward ‘ecclesiastical authority’ has clouded the sense of right and wrong”.

They claim the Pope “is responsible for the preservation and leadership of a worldwide totalitarian regime of coercion which subjugates its members with terrifying and health-endangering threats”.

They allege he is also responsible for “the adherence to a fatal forbiddance of the use of condoms, even when the danger of HIV-Aids infection exists” and for “the establishment and maintenance of a worldwide system of cover-up of the sexual crimes committed by Catholic priests and their preferential treatment, which aids and abets ever new crimes”.”

Very interesting- I think the Pope has a great deal of culpability in all of these crimes, and I hope the legal system produces justice for the victims.

I don’t think for a minute the court will do anything about this, but just the act of bringing the charges up is awesome.

Philadelphia Police Violently Attack Gay Couple ›

queerwatch:

[TRIGGER WARNING: hate crimes, police brutality, homophobia, racism, slurs]

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A gay couple are filing harassment and brutality charges against the local police department, after they say they were taken out of their homes and beaten in the snow by 10-12 officers with batons. Several neighbors have pictures and video.

In late December, police were called to the home of partners Luis Berrios and Jason Mendez after a neighbor heard what they thought was a domestic dispute. Officers immediately handcuffed Jason Mendez and dragged him outside, shoved him in the snow and started beating him with their batons, screaming “Nigger” and “Faggot.”

When Mr. Berrios demanded that the police stop beating his partner, they did the same thing to him. Eventually, police picked the men off the ground by their shirts and pants and threw them head-first into the squad cars (missing the first time so they landed on the ground face-first). Berrios and Mendez say that several neighbors were watching, crying and have photos and videos of the event.

Berrios filed the complaint with Internal Affairs on Dec 30th, and then again on Jan 13th after he was told they had not received his complaint. No official action have been taken as of yet. Mendez is still in jail.

[…]

Ugh, Philly, I would disown you as my home town if I could. What a sickening story.

Atlanta agrees to $1M settlement to gay bar ›

The city has agreed to pay $1 million to an Atlanta gay bar to settle a lawsuit over a botched police raid in 2009.

The Atlanta City Council voted 14-0 on Monday, Dec. 6 to pay the money to the Atlanta Eagle Bar. A private attorney filed the federal lawsuit on behalf of 19 people who say they were illegally searched and detained during Sept. 10, 2009 raid.

The city also agreed to oversee reforms within the Atlanta Police Department. The settlement must now go back to a federal judge for final approval.

SO HERE'S THE THING, PEOPLE. ›

thecurvature:

(Trigger Warning)

Right now? The time, right now, when everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off talking about how women LIE about rape, and anyway it WASN’T rape, because once she says yes you can do anything you like to her ammirite, bro?, and what’s this about maybe she was sleeping LALALALA I CAN HEAR YOU, sluts are just jealous, and they regret it in the morning, so they start international furors against some poor guy that the world is already pissed off at, with no good reason because he wasn’t even VIOLENT?

THAT RIGHT NOW?

This right now is probably not a good time to say “I’m real happy for you, and Imma let you finish about all of this girly rape apologism stuff, but the fact is that Assange is only being charged with anything because of Wikileaks.”

Because you know what? Chances are we know that. Chances are, it really fucking hurts to see governments finally taking rape “seriously,” only to know that they’re likely not taking it seriously at all, that they couldn’t care any less about rape than all of the librul d00ds running around talking about how women are lying whores and CIA operatives and radical feminists but lying whores especially, and are just using violence against women to their own ends in an attempt to shut down work that we support.

CHANCES ARE THAT HURTS A LOT. And that it hurts us, and upsets us, and affects us a whole lot more acutely than it affects you, dude, who thought now was the perfect time to mansplain this shit. Chances are we’re not stupid. And we know. And maybe also we’re feminist bloggers who spend EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY WRITING ABOUT HOW NO ONE CARES ABOUT RAPE, so if anyone knows that no one would care if Assange raped an entire fucking country of women except he pissed some governments off, it’s us.

[And maybe this shit doesn’t just hurt, maybe it’s also really triggering. Maybe seeing people you thought knew better spreading lies about what the charges are, describing them as downplayed charges that are STILL RAPE while claiming that they aren’t rape, and saying over and over again that violating women’s bodies isn’t violent because hey it’s just our bodies and if there’s not a fist hitting us in the jaw it doesn’t fucking matter, IS REALLY FUCKING TRIGGERING. Maybe it reminds us of how no one thinks our rapes count, or that if we were raped today that no one would care, and that is not just upsetting, but triggering as hell. It seems quite possible, that to some of us, it just might be.]

So maybe? Maybe right now? In this moment where I’m sure you have a whole lot to say but clearly haven’t thought for even half a fucking second about whether or not anyone is interested in hearing it? Maybe you should consider SHUTTING THE FUCK UP.

Girl kills pimp & is sentenced to prison for life ›

fuckyeahgenderstudies:

dancingferaldreamer:

Sixteen-year-old human trafficking victim Sara Kruzan was sentenced to life in prison without parole when, in a desperate act to escape captivity, she shot her pimp.

What is injustice? This.

This is completely unjust. Please read this woman’s story and sign the petition urging the Governator to release her. Sixteen years in prison for what amounts to an act of self-defense is far, far too long.
